FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEMPHIS, TN — March 12, 2026 — In August 1997, a 21-year-old Tiger Woods stood on the emerald fairways of The Links at Pine Hill, fresh off his historic Masters victory. In a one-day youth clinic that has since become local legend, Woods didn’t just teach Memphis children how to swing a club; he taught them that they belonged in a sport that had long felt out of reach.

Now, nearly 30 years later, history is coming full circle. The Sapphire Golf Tour—the premier professional platform for women of color in golf—is set to descend upon the newly renovated Pine Hill from April 9–12, 2026, for the Bluff City Women’s Open. The mission is clear: to “crack the egg” on a new era of passion for the game and reactivate the same transformative energy Tiger brought to the city three decades ago.

Bridging Generations of Excellence

The 1997 clinic, orchestrated by local golf legend Charles Hudson, was a turning point for inner-city youth. It proved that golf was a vehicle for character, scholarships, and success. Today, the Sapphire Golf Tour aims to do the same for a new generation, specifically focusing on the “missing middle”—the elite women of color who are ready for the professional stage but lack the visibility and resources to get there.

The Witness: From Student to Steward

Nobody understands the weight of this moment better than William Keys. In 1997, Keys was one of the many young Memphians standing on the grass, watching Tiger Woods defy the odds. Today, he serves as the Course Manager at The Links at Pine Hill, stewarding the very land where his passion was ignited.

“I remember that day like it was yesterday—the energy, the crowd, and the way Tiger made us feel like the world was open to us,” said Keys. “To be the Course Manager here 30 years later and welcome the Sapphire Golf Tour is a full-circle moment I never could have imagined. This tour represents the same breaking of barriers we saw in ’97, but this time, it’s about making sure our young girls know they have a professional path, too. We aren’t just hosting a tournament; we are reactivating a legacy.”

“Tiger showed the 2000 in. attendance what was possible for young men of color at Pine Hill,” said Tarek DeLavallade, Commissioner of the Sapphire Golf Tour. “In 2026, we are returning to that same sacred ground to show young girls and boys—and the entire city of Memphis—that the future of this game is diverse, vibrant, professional and full of potential.”

A Weekend of Impact and Culture

The Bluff City Women’s Open isn’t just a tournament; it’s a cultural “reactivation” designed to meet Memphis youth where they are.

  • The Junior Golf Clinic: On Saturday, April 11, professional tour players will lead a hands-on clinic for Memphis youth. Much like Tiger’s ’97 visit, this session focuses on more than just the “stinger”—it’s about confidence, mentorship, and seeing professional athletes who look like them.
  • The Fan Experience: To bridge the gap between “country club” and “community,” the event will feature a DJ on the 19th green, local food trucks, and a 20-foot Jumbotron streaming the Masters Tournament live.
  • Access for All: In a commitment to the next generation, all youth aged 18 and under will receive free admission to the tournament, allowing them to walk the fairways and watch these elite athletes compete in real-time.

A Legacy Renewed

The Links at Pine Hill, the first integrated course in Memphis, has always been a site of progress. By hosting the Sapphire Golf Tour season opener, Memphis once again takes center stage in the movement for sports equity.

“We are here to finish what was started in ’97,” DeLavallade added. “We’re not just playing a game; we’re rebuilding a pipeline.”
